Mr. Vargas is a member of the state bar of California, the United States District Court for the Southern District of California, and the Quechan tribal court. He earned his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Illinois College of Law, which he attended on a merit scholarship.

Prior to joining Hurrell Cantrall Mr. Vargas served as a Deputy District Attorney in Imperial County, California. As a member of the Special Prosecutions Unit he prosecuted drug trafficking and drug sales offenses. He has extensive experience on matters related to fourth amendment issues and other constitutional matters. He worked closely with law enforcement in the preparation and review of search warrants, electronic surveillance, and assisted in building cases for wiretaps. He successfully defended numerous motions for suppression of evidence and disclosure of informants’ identities. He also first chaired drug trafficking trials to guilty jury verdicts.

After graduating from law school, Mr. Vargas joined California Rural Legal Assistance, a non-profit organization that provides legal services to low income individuals in employment, housing, and health care matters. He litigated wage theft and discrimination matters.

He is fluent in Spanish and conversational in Portuguese. In his free time, he enjoys traveling, reading, and learning new languages.
